WA provided architecture and engineering services for a new Metrorail Station located off NW 74th Street, west of the Palmetto Expressway. The extension consists of 1.1 miles with 0.6 miles of elevated guideways, 0.5 miles of on-grade track, a passenger station and a parking lot designed to accommodate 800 cars. The project entailed the first addition to the original Metro-Rail system and is the first and only station completely located on grade. In keeping with the design of the other stations and the prominent local material, the design employs liberal use of concrete and exposed concrete masonry units for most of its components. A unique architectural feature is a metal-clad vaulted roof/ceiling structure which covers the entire length of the platform. Aside from protecting the passengers from inclement weather it acts as a visual icon for vehicles traveling southbound on the Palmetto Expressway. Ancillary functions are also provided including fare collection, entry plaza, restrooms, train control and logistics room, train operator rest area, and emergency power generation room.
